Jen Holden

About Jen

Jen has practised exclusively in criminal law since her admission to the Bar in 2009. Jen started off working at the Public Defence Service (PDS) in South Auckland where she spent her days in the busiest court in New Zealand. After 6 years of working in South Auckland, Jen moved to Wellington where she spent time working at the PDS in the Hutt Valley before returning to Auckland in 2018 and setting up as a Barrister sole. Jen joined Pohutukawa Chambers when it was formed in October 2022.

Jen deals with clients from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures, recognising that every person, regardless of where they grew up or where they are from, needs a voice in court. Jen prides herself on listening to her clients, getting their side of the story, giving robust advice and getting the best outcome at court.

Jen enjoys being on her feet in court whether it be at a sentencing, a pre-trial, a judge alone trial or a jury trial. She works hard for her clients and advocates with passion and for what is right. 

Jen appears on the following types of cases:

  • Dishonesty

  • Drugs

  • Traffic

  • Sentencing applications (discharge without conviction, s94 applications)

 Jen takes private instructions through an instructing solicitor and is a PAL 3 legal aid provider.

Dushanka Govender

About Dushanka

Dushanka is an employed barrister for Jen Holden.

Dushanka assists Jen in her day-to-day practice. She regularly appears in court, carries out legal research, assists Jen with trial work, as well as takes on her own cases.

Dushanka graduated from the University of Otago in 2022 and was admitted the same year. She joined Jen’s practice in October 2023. Prior to working for Jen, Dushanka clerked for another senior criminal barrister and interned at the Public Defence Service.

Dushanka is passionate about criminal law and being an advocate for her clients. Dushanka is an approved Legal Aid provider (PAL 1).
